Description
The title of Swarm Collecting by Sky Macklay connects the piece to the language of bees, who "dance" in order to lead the other bees in their hive towards some collective goal. in the same way, the 21 instruments of the ensemble seem to communicate via an exchange of musical ideas that gradually build into a buzzing musical swarm. The 11-minute score calls for multiphonics from the double reeds and occasional just-intonation harmonies.
Commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Swarm Collecting received its world premiere on November 5, 2019 by the L.A. Phil New Music Group under the baton of John Adams.
