Description

Julius Hemphill wrote extensively for the trio, quartet, and quintet contexts with a rhythm section. These ten works cover a wide range of musical styles and moods, from "reflection to vigor" to use one of Hemphill's phrases. He would adapt these compositions over time, adding a new part when opportunities presented themselves. These works are orchestrated here for his main quartet instrumentation of saxophone, trumpet, cello or bass, and drums. He would often add a new part for the guitar or have the guitar double a saxophone or trumpet line. The guitar parts give concert notation that could be used for other instrumentation in your ensemble.
