Bach: Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1004

Johann Sebastian Bach's Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1004 was written between 1717 and 1720. The partita contains five movements, frequently listed by their French names: AllemandeCouranteSarabandeGigue, and Chaconne.

The Chaconne is a staple of the violin repertoire as well as a "right of passage" for many violinists. Yehudi Menuhin called the Chaconne "the greatest structure for solo violin that exists". Joshua Bell took things a bit further saying that the Chaconne is "not just one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, but one of the greatest achievements of any man in history."
