Description

Jean Françaix (1912–1997) was a French composer and pianist known for his joyful, expressive music. He gained early recognition, studying under Nadia Boulanger and Maurice Ravel, and quickly became a successful composer. Françaix composed over 200 works, including chamber music and film scores, but his music saw less performance after the 1970s due to his rejection of serialism. This Tema con Variazioni (1974) was written for a clarinet exam at the Paris Conservatoire. Composed for the A clarinet at Ulysse Delécluse's request, it features six variations and a cadenza based on the main theme. The piece, dedicated to Françaix's grandson Olivier, reflects a playful, mischievous child, showcasing Françaix's characteristic style. Introduction and performing notes in French and English by the clarinetist Rémi Lerner.
