Description
The manuscript of this relatively unknown single-movement sonata is dated November 27, 1823, and thus is from Mendelssohn's formative student period in Berlin. It is contemporaneous with several instrumental works, including the young composer's Concerto in E Major for two pianos (September 13 - October 17, 1823), the Piano Quartet in f Minor, Op. 2 (November 19 - December 7, 1823), and the Viola Sonata in c Minor (November 27, 1823 - February 14, 1824). Mendelssohn also finished during 1823 several string sinfonias, a string quartet in E-flat Major, and the Singspiel "Die beiden Neffen."
