Description
Lobgesang was written for the 400th anniversary of the invention of moveable type by Johannes Gutenberg, an event celebrated in Leipzig in the Summer of 1840. The work unites some of Mendelssohn's most pressing compositional concerns: to bring the Church and the concert hall one step closer together as he felt had already been accomplished in England; and, at the same time, to give expression to his didactic and educational impetus while creating a novel genre transcending conventional boundaries.
