Description
Water Music for Woodwinds is Hemphill's earliest foray into writing for saxophone choirs. It is a concert-length work, far-reaching in its compositional ambitions. Water Music is full of beautiful melodic themes, striking up-tempo lines, rich counterpoint, and a full exploration of the layering of voices possible with this size ensemble.
Hemphill composed for the woodwind doubles played by each player on the premiere, adding flute and clarinet within the texture. The basic instrumentation is three alto/sopranos, two tenors, and two baritones. The woodwind doubles can be adapted to fit your group's instrumentation. Each performer plays an important improvisational role in this four-movement work.
