Hemphill: Quartets - Book 1 (arr. for string quartet)

Description

"It is exciting to create a String Quartet edition of the rich compositional world of Julius Hemphill's celebrated writing for Saxophone Quartet. The full range of his compositional concerns is found in these works. for these editions, I have left the articulations as they are in the saxophone edition, reflecting what Hemphill put in his scores and what is gleaned from his recordings. (Please see my notes on Hemphill's performance practice and on the individual works given in the score.) Your ensemble is invited to add techniques and bowings particular to the string quartet as you hear them. This would be fully within Hemphill's creative practice.

As I note for Saxophone Quartet as well, these works can be be performed with improvisation as originally conceived, or they can stand alone in a Suite format as a multi-movement concert work. and of course, with some combination thereof. —Marty Ehrlich
