Description
My String Quartet No. 4 is a short and intense movement lasting about nine minutes. A number of brief ideas and gestures recur and transform to weave a continuously unfolding tapestry. The surface of the music may appear volatile – pitch and rhythm shifting, and the harmony often intensified by quarter-tones – but the piece as a whole is unified by its underlying tempi and modality.
It was commissioned by York Late Music Concert Series and first performed bythe Bingham String Quartet on September 2nd 2017. It was composed in June 2017 in the high Pyrenees at Centre d'Art i Natura, Farrera, Catalonia.
The quartet was inspired by Voznesensky's poem War
