Composed in 1928 as a contest piece for the annual examinations at the Paris Conservatory. The Romance features an expressive solo line for the bassoon over a fairly conventional accompaniment. The Tarentelle is cast as a lively 6/8 dance with the bassoon occasionally serving in a accompanimental capacity and sometimes switching from compound to simple meter.
