Description

Transcribed and edited by Jonathan Wainwright

Latin motets for one, two and four voices and basso continuo are the contents of the second of three MB volumes devoted to the music of George Jeffreys. (The third, forthcoming, will include motets for three, five and six voices.) Some of Jeffreys' earliest Latin music may have been intended for private aristocratic devotions, or perhaps even for the privy chambers of Charles I. His later sacred music, including some of his most successful and experimental work, was probably written for services or private devotions at Kirby Hall, the seat of his patron Christopher Hatton, and is a notable example of a continuing commitment to the Italianate stile nuovo in the years of the Restoration.
