Description
Kitimbua Kivumbi is a Swahili phrase that loosely translates as 'Stomp the Dust'. This work was inspired by a trip the composer, Shawn Okpebholo, took to Kenya where he studied the music of the Akamba living in the Machakos region. It was the Second Place Winner of the 2016 American Prize in Composition (orchestral division). Okpebholo is the recipient of the 2021 Walter Hinrichsen Award which is bestowed by the American Academy of Arts and Letters annually. A performance of the work by the Wheaton College Symphony Orchestra can be viewed on YouTube.
