Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) wrote his four movement AFRICAN SUITE for piano in 1898, two years after the success of his BALLADE in A Minor, as a result of meeting African-American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, who encouraged the young man to explore his African heritage. "Danse nègre," the high-energy fourth and final movement in the suite, is also the most familiar.
