Description

Four Romantic Madrigals is a new edition of selected madrigals composed by John Stainer (1840–1901). Jeremy Dibble of Durham University brings Stainer's expressive and enticing part-songs to a wider audience by presenting them in modern notation.

  1. ‘Disappointment' – a six-part madrigal which sets the popular ‘Pastoral Ballad IV' of the eighteenth-century poet William Shenstone
  2. ‘Dry your sweet cheek' – an emotionally turbulent setting of Herrick's ‘Comfort to a lady upon the death of her husband' from Hesperides (1648)
  3. ‘The Castle by the Sea' – a rich and complex setting of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's prose romance, Hyperion , for two five-part choirs (SSATB, SSATB)
  4. ‘Like as a ship' – an ambitious and harmonically colourful setting of sonnet XXXIV from Edmund Spenser's sonnet cycle Amoretti (1595)
