This Suite was written in 1978 in response to a request from Howard Snell for a challenging work, suitable for trumpet or horn, which would bridge the gap between the purely technical etude and the solo recital piece. Although Howard Snell''s trumpet-playing skill was very much in the composer''s mind while writing the piece, he has tried to link this with much of his own approach to the flexibility of the horn. The second movement, and some of the third, was influenced by the sudden death in March 1978 of the composer''s father.
