Description
The Ascension Cantata "Du Lebensfürst, Herr Jesu Christ", BuxWV 22 by Dieterich Buxtehude is based on five verses of the hymn of thanksgiving of the same name by Johann Rist (1641), and in formal terms, is in the genre of a Concerto cum aria. An introductory sonata is followed by verse and ritornello in alternation. A special feature of the scoring is the use of the violetta as a string instrument in the middle of the five-part string texture. This can be played by a modern viola.
